Today, we observe Denim Day, a global campaign aimed at raising awareness about sexual assault and supporting survivors. Denim Day originated from a 1990s Italian Supreme Court case in which a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her attacker remove them, thereby implying consent. This controversial decision sparked outrage and led to the creation of Denim Day as a symbol of protest against victim-blaming and to challenge misconceptions about sexual violence.

At Empowerment Through Equity Consulting, we recognize the importance of fostering safe, inclusive, and supportive environments where individuals feel empowered to speak out against sexual assault and advocate for survivors' rights. We celebrate Denim Day as an opportunity to stand in solidarity with survivors, raise awareness about sexual assault prevention, and promote a culture of consent, respect, and empowerment.

Activities for Denim Day:

  1. Wear Denim: Show your support by wearing denim jeans, jackets, or accessories to raise awareness about Denim Day and spark conversations about sexual assault prevention.

  2. Educational Workshops: Host or attend workshops focused on sexual assault awareness, consent education, and bystander intervention training to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills to prevent and respond to sexual violence.

  3. Social Media Campaign: Share information, facts, and resources about Denim Day and sexual assault awareness on social media platforms to educate your network and amplify the message.

  4. Fundraising Events: Organize or participate in fundraising events, such as Denim Day walks or charity drives, to support organizations that provide services and support to survivors of sexual assault.

  5. Community Discussions: Organize or participate in community discussions, panel discussions, or storytelling events where survivors and advocates can share their stories, experiences, and insights to foster understanding, empathy, and support.

  6. Resource Sharing: Distribute educational materials, brochures, and resources about sexual assault prevention, consent, and support services in schools, workplaces, and community centers to raise awareness and promote informed decision-making.

  7. Artistic Expression: Engage in creative activities such as art exhibitions, poetry readings, or film screenings that explore themes of sexual assault awareness, consent, empowerment, and healing to promote dialogue, reflection, and social change.
